We take our SUP boards from the bike shop in Gialova and we go at the end of Divari beach (10 minutes driving). From this point you see the edge of the Sphacteria island. The distance to reach the only beach of this island is only 300 meters, so we may need to SUP from 15 to 30 minutes, upon weather conditions. The view from this beach is just amazing. Upon weather conditions, we SUP south closeby the shore of the island for about 30 to 40 minutes and we return to Divari beach. You have fre time to swim and play by the beach.

Voidokoilia Beach, is not only one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, but maybe also in the Mediterranean Sea. The sheltered bay is referred to in Homer’s Odyssey and archaeologists believe it was used by King Nestor as a port in ancient times. Situated at 12 km from the city of Pylos (in the north of the Navarino bay), you reach from the village of Petrochori. The curve of Voidokilia seems to be traced with a compass like a giant Greek omega (the name means “cow’s belly”), from the two rocky promontories that define the entrance of it. It is surrounded by a magnificent beach of light, fine sand, protected by the wind, and the crystalline beach invite someone to go swimming.

Impressed by the view of the ‘eternal’ walls built up on the sunburned hill, just above the Voidokilia beach, we challenged to visit the Palaiokastro. It was a modest effort but giving large rewards… Palaiokastro (or Old Navarino Castle) located on the top of the hill at north tip of Navarino Bay opposite the northern side of Sfaktiria islet, which is the north entrance to Navarino Bay, known as Sykia Pass. As long you reach the western tip of Divari beach, the footpath starts. The first 300meters you walk on a solid and wide dirt road, having on your left hand side the Sfaktiria Island, the north entrance of Navarino Bay and you heading the west. The endless blue of Ionion Sea is impressive.

Near the entrance to the port of Pylos lies Niokastro, which stands as a vigilant guard, protecting the area from the vulnerable side of the sea. As many of its construction elements testify, Niokastro is an Ottoman creation; its construction started sometime after 1573, after the defeat of the Turks in the naval battle of Nafpaktos two years earlier. Niokastro was named thus in order to distinguish it from Paleokastro or Paleo Navarino, which was a Frankish creation and dominated the old port. Like almost all castles in the wider area that roughly belong to the same period, Niokastro was witness to many onslaughts of several ambitious conquerors (Venetians, Turks, Russians), who left their mark on its premises. For a short while it was also conquered by the Greeks during the Revolution, but they didn’t manage to hold on to it for long. Despite all the hardships it faced throughout the centuries, Niokastro is still one of the most beautiful and best preserved castles in Greece.  

A visit to the waterfall is a great choice for a walk-in nature. The Kalamari waterfall is located on a green hill a few kilometers from the lagoon of Gialova in southwestern Messene. It is a small wetland with many amphibians and insects living in its waters which makes it ideal if you have young children and are looking forward to giving them an unforgettable exploration. You can reach it walking along a verdant, narrow path that passes through a forest of oaks, plane trees, pines and skins. After 15 minutes of walking, you reach a clearing surrounded by plane trees. There is a small bridge that you have to cross to reach the waterfall with the beautiful pond. Kalamari waterfall. During the summer there is not much water except for a few small streams that run into the rock and drip into the lake. It is much better to visit it in spring when there is much more water. Do not forget to get a camera with you as you can make amazing shots.
